By dr. Dyan Mega Inderawati

Skin changes are one of the many complaints experienced by women during pregnancy. Some pregnant women have glowing skin where the skin becomes brighter, and more charming. However, others pregnant women actually have various skin problems that interfere with daily appearance.

Here are four types of skin problems most often experienced by pregnant women and the solutions to solve them:

Acne

The emergence of acne is the most common complaint among pregnant women. This complaint is not only experienced by those with already vulnerable skin, but also by those with normal skin type.

The emergence of acne is linked with hormonal influences. During pregnancy, there is an increase in various types of hormones in a woman's body, one of which is the androgen hormone.

This hormone triggers an increase in oil production. The increase of oil production can cause skin pores obstruction, the formation of blackheads and acne.

To solve this skin problem, wash your face regularly, especially after outdoor activities. Make sure to pay attention to the active ingredients in your facial cleanser that is safe for pregnant women, such as alpha-hydroxy acid.

Stretch marks

If acne usually appears on the pregnant woman's face, stretch marks may appear on her body. In fact, stretch marks occur in 90% of pregnant women.

This condition happens due to the stretching of subcutaneous tissue surpassing its elasticity limit due to weight gain. As the result, purplish pink lines will form on the abdomen, thighs, and arms or around the breast.

Although stretch marks appear faint after giving birth, but this skin problem is very difficult to treat, even with intensive treatments such as lasers. However, according to research, stretch marks can be minimized by regular application of lotion, especially in vulnerable areas previously-mentioned.

It is also necessary to pay attention to your weight gain, so you will not get too much additional weight gain, and to increase your consumption of fruits that contain vitamin C.

Black spots

Black spots are also commonly experienced by pregnant women. These patches can appear anywhere, including the face.

If happens on the face, black spots can form the shape of a mask because it usually happens on the cheeks, nose, to the forehead. Therefore, the appearance of black spots on the face is often called "the mask of pregnancy".

Although it can ruin your appearance, black spots generally disappear after giving birth. To minimize this skin disorder, pregnant women are advised to avoid sun exposure, especially during blazing sunlight exposure, which is from 9 am to 4 pm.

Hair loss

In addition to skin problems, pregnant women often have hair problem. Pregnant women can experience hair loss that is severe enough to cause baldness.

Since this problem is caused by hormonal changes, not much can be done to overcome this complaint. The most important thing is to maintain the intake of nutritious food for hair growth and not to tie your hair too tight so that your hair loss does not get worse.

Although it is believed that this skin problems only arise in those who bear male babies, in fact mothers who are pregnant with baby girls can also experience this various skin problems. Scientifically, the sex of the baby has not been proven to be related to skin problem among expecting mother. Please keep in mind to eat healthy and nutritious foods, keep a positive thought, and adopting a healthy lifestyle at all times.
